Renewable Energy services from TSG.

Renewable Energy for Social Housing

Installing renewable energy systems into a single dwelling has the benefit of increasing energy efficiency, cutting fuel bills, reducing carbon emissions and protecting the environment. For housing associations, local authorities and social landlords, these benefits can be multiplied across the housing stock, to protect your tenants from the growing issue of fuel poverty, whilst lowering carbon emissions.

What is Renewable Energy?

Renewable energy is that which is produced from natural resources, such as ground heat and solar light. It is possible to integrate renewable energy systems into the construction of new builds, or retro fit them into existing housing stock.

Properties with renewable energy systems are able to generate a proportion of their heat and/or power from natural resources. This results in more affordable and comfortable properties for tenants to live with the added benefit of reducing the risk of fuel poverty that is associated with a reliance on traditional off-gas grid solutions such as oil, lpg and direct electric heating systems.

Providing a Professional Service

TSG has been partnering with housing associations, local authorities and social landlords to implement large scale renewable energy installation programs for many years. This experience allows us to offer a fully bespoke and tailored solution to meet each organisations individual requirements and goals.

We are proud to be at the forefront of new technologies and have established strong relationships with the UK’s leading manufacturers of renewable energy systems. We have achieved partner status with several of these manufacturers due to our commitment to renewable energy and our high standards of workmanship.

Our Role

We work closely with both our new and existing clients to provide a smooth, cost effective and tailored renewables solution.

We provide an initial analysis of the existing housing stock in the form of a bespoke report and presentation detailing the following for each individual property:-

  • Running cost of existing traditional off-gas heating systems (oil, gas, lpg and direct electric)
  • Estimate of running costs of the renewable technology being considered
  • Estimate of Carbon saved
  • Run cost savings on a property by property basis
  • A Renewable Heat Incentive or Feed in Tariff estimate of grant payments on a property by property basis.
  • Estimate of installation costs and total program costs.

TSG understands the importance of tenant engagement and support that needs to be provided when considering or implementing a Renewables program. We assist in the following ways:-

  • Liaising with the tenants committee
  • Mobile demonstrations of the renewable technologies being considered in the local community
  • Dedicated tenant liaison officers
  • Bespoke DVD instruction booklets
  • Training of tenants to become an Eco Champion in the community
  • Tenant visits to manufacturers

Prior to installation we agree start dates and conduct a survey on each individual property. We ensure that the tenants are constantly informed on the works that are to be carried out and updated on progress throughout the installation.

TSG can also assist with Green Deal assessments and gaining Renewable Heat Incentive or Feed in Tariff Funding.

Renewable Energy Systems

TSG has experience of installing a wide variety of renewable energy systems. We will work with you to identify the best solutions for your housing stock. Our recommendations could include one or more of the following options:

Ground Source Heat Pumps

Ground Source Heat Pumps capture heat in the ground. This heat can then be used to heat radiators, underfloor or warm air heating systems and hot water in your home. A ground source heat pump circulates a mixture of water and glycol around a loop of pipe – called a ground loop – this can either be a horizontal loop or if space is tight a vertical borehole. Even in winter months, the temperature below the ground remains warm, so this is a reliable source of heat.

Air Source Heat Pumps

Air Source Heat Pumps absorb heat from the outside air. This heat can then be used to heat radiators, underfloor heating systems, or warm air convectors and hot water in your home.

An air source heat pump works much the same as a refrigerator, but in reverse. It extracts heat from the outside air and can get heat from the air even when the temperature is as low as -15° C.

Air Source Heat Pumps can be used in a variety of different applications from an individual dwelling to an entire apartment block.

Solar Photovoltaic Panels

Solar Panels convert sunlight into electricity using photovoltaic cells. They can operate even on a cloudy day, although they are at their most effective in bright daylight. It is important to position them where light is at optimum levels and not being blocked by trees or other buildings to ensure they are able to perform effectively.

Solar Thermal Systems

Solar water heating systems use solar panels, called collectors, fitted to the roof. These collect heat from the sun and use it to heat up water which is stored in a hot water cylinder. There are two types of solar water heating panels:

  • Evacuated tubes
  • Flat plate collectors, which can be fixed on the roof tiles or integrated into the roof.

Mechanical Heat Recovery Ventilation Systems

Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) is a whole house ventilation system that both supplies and extracts air throughout a property. It offers a balanced low energy ventilation solution for new dwellings and re-uses up to 95% of the heat that would have otherwise have been lost.

MCS Accreditation

If you are looking at renewable energy systems to improve the energy efficiency in your housing stock, there are Government Initiatives that can be applied for including the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) and the Feed In Scheme. Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) accreditation is an eligibility requirement for these Government financial incentives; both the installer and the products need to be MCS accredited to qualify.

TSG are passionate about adopting new renewable energy technologies and as a result were one of the first companies in the UK to achieve MCS accreditation. MCS Accreditation offers you reassurance that we are committed to renewable energy and always deliver the highest standards of service.
